Pulsed high-intensity source of polarized protons

1987
Abstract We described a source of polarized protons that has a peak beam current up to 6 mA and a degree of polaration 0.76±0.02. The repetition rate of current pulses is 1 Hz; the duration of each at half-height is about 100 μs. The beam of hydrogen atoms is generated by a pulsed dissociator with a radiofrequency discharge. For obraining a beam of polarized atoms two sextupole separating magnets with an induction at the pole tips of about 9 kG are used. The protons are polarized further by a unit of weak field rf transition. A new type of ionizer has been developed; it produces polarized protons via the charge exchange of polarized hydrogen atoms and ions of deuterium plasma. A polarimeter for a low-energy proton beam is described. The results of measurements of the emittance of a polarized proton beam are presented. The possibility of obtaining negative polarized hydrogen ions is also discussed.
