Physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling software

2020
Abstract The use of physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models has increased significantly in recent years, expanding beyond the traditional role in environmental chemical risk assessment to other industries and research sectors such as pharmaceutical development, consumer product safety assessment, and clinical or medicinal practice. The increased application of PBPK modeling has been aided by the development of cheminformatic approaches and encouraged by a broad regulatory push to find alternatives to animal models, partly through the development and use of in silico tools. A wide variety of PBPK modeling platforms have been developed, and new tools constantly emerge, leaving a great number of choices of software. This chapter provides an introduction to a wide variety of PBPK software platforms, aiming to highlight tools with different levels of accessibility and capability to support different user requirements and emphasizing features likely to be most useful for learning the concepts and mechanics of PBPK modeling.
