In the Middle of Nowhere
2008
On the plane, I’m seated next to our young daughter. She’s taken the window seat, and I’ve got the aisle. Are we each sitting in the seats we wanted? Are we each going where we want to go? Flying to Mexico on a job-related trip: I’m none too confident about this move, but it seems like everything’s going to turn out fine. We’ll see. You never know. For the time being, it’s a matter of getting settled and adapting. These are all the things I was thinking while we flew on the jet. So much has happened since then. Our daughter finished her schooling; my husband kept writing; and me, I continued my academic life, in spite of stumbling blocks and illness. We became well integrated, despite coming from a rowdy coastal culture.
