Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi)

2021
Abstract The plant Bacopa monnieri L. (common name brahmi) is a time-honored Indian herb, which has very big monetary cost due to memory revitalizing/enhancing capacity. The estimated annual market demand of B. monnieri was estimated at 1000 tons for the year 2000 and reported by Board of National Medicinal Plants. It has continued to increase day by day for potential uses in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for the treatment of numerous disorders. In recent years, B. monnieri has received much attention worldwide due to its wide spectrum of pharmacologic activities including against Alzheimer disease, a disorder with ambiguous source and pathogenesis that happens due to degeneration of neurons. Bacopa is widely used in the cases of forgetfulness and long-term memory loss, especially in the elderly patients. Alzheimer disease is the main reason behind dementia in 60%–80% of cases in elderly patients. It affects human life significantly. Hence, researchers are showing interest for the complete cure of Alzheimer disease by conducting well-established pharmacologic studies in animals as well as humans. The ramifications of cognition-improving chemicals are highly encouraging, but they should be properly mollified by the desired virtuous considerations for the new era of neural enhancement.
