Parting Thoughts: Finding a Balance

A summary of the study findings is offered including the method, ‘Keys to the ABI Cage’, and the underlying principles and recommendations for practice outlined. The importance of finding solutions based on the voice of people with ABI is strongly suggested. The aspects of learning that are relevant are reviewed. Implications of the study findings to professional practice are explained and set out in text offset to the right with relevant updated literature referenced. The importance of a positive approach that builds on strengths is highlighted. The scaffolding required for learning is outlined incorporating: learning in context, information about working with the positives, working with social lives as opposed to broken bodies, the importance of trust, respect and human conceptions of love and emotion as setting a context for change and growth; the rejection of copious testing of deficit; the importance of professional empathy and is highlighted and, even, demanded. Study limitations are discussed.
