Certification of a small wind turbine
2017
EAZ wind is a company producing small wind turbines with a diameter of 12 meter. A lot of
turbines have been placed in the province of Groningen. To make their area of sale, they want to
place the turbines in Germany as well. Unfortunately, the turbines have to be certified to be able to
place them legally. The most common certificate for small wind turbines is the IEC61400-2. This
document describes a first few steps in the long certification process. One of the most important
things for the company are wind measurements. Those are needed for both the company itself and
the certificate. It was chosen to outsource the wind measurements and perform them at a location
with an existing wind turbine. A location with the least possible objects in the neighbourhood and a
collaborative owner was chosen. Unfortunately, time was too short to actually do the wind
measurements. Another important thing for the certificate are strength calculations on the turbine
design. All the values are gathered and the simplified load cases as described in IEC61400-2 are
calculated. Most situations did not result in serious problems. There are however some problematic
load cases, that the company should analyse further.
