EFECTO DE LA APLICACIÓN PARENTERAL DE LISOZIMA SOBRE LA PRODUCCIÓN Y CALIDAD DEL SEMEN DE VERRACOS EN VENEZUELA Effect of the Application of Parental Lysozyme on Production and Quality of Boars Semen in Venezuela

2013
In swine artificial insemination, the number of doses obtained depends on the semen quality and ejaculate sperm number. Weekly parenteral application of lysozyme in mature boars could increase the number of ejaculates sperm, thus increasing the number of doses. In the present study, 10 mature boars were taken and separated into two groups, five boars for control group (Group C) and five for lysozyme treatment (Group L). During the first month of study, no treatment was applied. During the second month, lysozyme was applied weekly; via parenteral during four weeks, every week sperm was taken from each boar toward seminal extraction and evaluated in a laboratory data was recorded. Statistical analysis for 190 ejaculates were analyzed using the Statview program and differences were observed (P<0.05) between groups with averages of 72.26 x 10 9 ± 16.8 and 64.72 x 10 9 ± 17.25 for C and L, respectively. Statistical analysis indicates that there were differences (P<0.05) between treatments, specifically in the month of after-treatment, in Group L 58.48 x 10 9 ± 16.01 and 71.6 x 10 9 ± 15.2 for total sperm count for months 1 and 3, respectively. There were no differences for motility and vitality among treatments. Differences between treatments for the ejaculate volume were observed. Differences between months in treatment (Group L) for the ejaculate volume were not observed. This work focused on the future use of the lysozyme on the reproductive management of the pigs boars, and possibly in other species, improving sperm production. Furthemore, it is recommended the study for a longer period and possibly the application or daily supply of the enzyme as a food additive.
