The Determination Of The Welding Process Parameters By Laser On Ti6Al4V Alloy

2017
Ti6Al4V alloy is commonly used especially in aerospace industry due to its low density compared to steel, and in chemical and marine industries due to its good corrosive properties, high strength and endurance. It is also commonly used in dental and orthopedic implants since 1960s in biomedical applications due to its good biocompatibility, its fracture resistance especially in high load area implants such as femoral heads and low cytotoxicity. Its usage has increased rapidly recently. Occasionally implants need to be taken out surgically due to fractures and this is may lead to serious damages in bone tissue. This paper reports results on the use of lasers on Ti6Al4V for welding such fractures without removing them. Studies were carried out in-vitro using a millisecond laser under argon gas at different energies and pulses. Surface imaging was carried out after laser processing and optimum laser parameters were determined. Keywords: Ti6Al4V, Biomaterial, Laser Welding, Micro Imaging.
