The state of the working class: Debt and precarity

2016
Outside of the scholarly and activist left, we rarely talk about class in a politically meaningful way. On the rare occa sions it does come up, it is discussed in terms of distinctions based on culture, voting patterns and type of labour. Yet considerations of class have been re-emerging in mainstream political debate over recent years. Occupy and other post-GFC movements developed in response to tensions around class divisions. Class has also featured heavily in the mildly revolutionary rhetoric of Bernie Sanders, Jeremy Corbyn and European political parties such as Syriza and Podemos.
