Radiation-induced luminescence of Ce-doped SrO–B2O3 glasses

2021
Abstract The performance of phosphors generally depends on the local coordination of activators. The luminescence properties are also affected by the excitation light source and radiation-induced luminescence, like X-ray-induced scintillation, is quite different from conventional photoluminescence (PL) excited by UV light. Here, we have examined the optical and luminescence properties of Ce3+ in strontium borate glasses. The pulse height spectra by 241Am irradiation indicate that the X-ray induced luminescence intensity detected consists of prompt scintillation and storage luminescence. Persistent luminescence at room temperature was clearly observed in B2O3-rich glass after X-ray and UV irradiation. In the present borate glass system, B2O3-rich glass exhibiting a deep optical absorption edge is favorable for high luminescence intensity by UV irradiation and storage luminescence, while SrO-rich glass is suitable for high detection ability of α-rays.
