Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al–Cu–Mg Alloy Produced by Non-contact Ultrasonic Casting Route

2021
Non-contact ultrasonic vibration during solidification of castings is a new technique to refine the grain size and to get good mechanical properties. In this work, comparative study of non-contact ultrasonic casting and conventional casting of Al-4wt%Cu-2wt%Mg alloy was carried out. Castings made through non-contact ultrasonic casting technique and conventional methods were characterized. Refined and equiaxed microstructures were obtained in non-contact ultrasonic casting technique compared to conventional casting and that resulted in better mechanical properties in non-contact ultrasonic casting compared to conventional casting. Ultrasonic vibration technique is not only refining the microstructure but also helps in degassing.
