The Meanderings of Interpretation
1997
With the collaboration of harpsichordist Philippe Ramin, I have reimmersed myself in the Passacaille de Scylla and in the choreographic and musical analysis of this 119-measure piece. I chose this dance because it is complex and because it remained unclear to me, until I read the entire tragedy. Based on my reading of the notation, I had planned to propose two danced interpretations: one charming, facetious and assertive, the other violent, unstable and authoritative. But after reading the libretto, the apparently contradictory qualities come together to form a coherent argument.
