Relation of Root Characters with Plant Yield and Its Components of Japonica Rice

2010
The relation of root characters with grain yield and its components of Japonica rice was studied in a pot experiment. The results showed the root absorption area, root volume, root oxidizing ability per plant, root sap bleeding and root number had significant relation with grain yield, especially from booting stage to middle filling stage. The total root absorption area had the most significant effect on yield. The root volume, root sap bleeding and root active absorption area had significant effect on yield from booting stage to early filling stage. The root number and root oxidizing ability per plant had greatly effect on yield during grain-filling stage. But the root dry weight and total root length had little correlation with grain yield during early growing stage. The main root traits had significantly positive correlation with seed setting rate, number of primary and secondary branches, and grain weight, but had negative correlation with effective panicles. The correlations of root traits with grain weight and panicle length were not significant.
