Forbidden rotational transitions and astrophysics

Abstract The theory of forbidden rotational transitions is reviewed and spontaneous emission rates and lifetimes of metastable levels of NH3, H3O+, H3+, and CH3CN are calculated. Rotational levels are classified into stable, metastable, and unstable levels. The importance of the forbidden rotational transitions in the thermalization of interstellar molecules is discussed.
