As Loucas de Pedra Lilas. Womens theater takes to the streets... and the world

2001
As Loucas de Pedra Lilas a Brazilian street theater troupe won the 2001 V-Day awards as the most innovative initiative against domestic violence that could be successfully developed in different social and cultural contexts. As Loucas de Pedra Lilas aims to combat and prevent domestic violence by placing their art at the service of networks supporting women living in situations of violence. They suggest that cultural events can be used to encourage new paradigms to improve the status of women. In addition different creative languages can openly address the need for a social dialogue that denounces any violation of womens rights. It is noted that As Loucas shared the 2001 V-Day awards after competing with 60 other finalists from around the world. As Loucas used their prize money to purchase a digital camera and hire a professional video technician to record the debates that often take place after their performances. It also makes a special effort to collaborate with the historically significant dates of the womens movement.
