Test Results of the R&D Coil for 1kWh/1MW SMES

1999
The development of the 1kWh/lMW toroidal type SMES (ESK) with 6 elementary coils and module type connection has been carried out to demonstrate the electric power system stabilization and load fluctuation compensation in the power grid. The R&D coil for the elementary one was wound with the same conductor as that of ESK and tested with a back-up coil to evaluate the critical current, stability and mechanical movement between coil windings at the operating condition. The critical current of the R&D coil was 3.7 kA at 5.2 T as same as it’s expecting value. The recovery current was enough high as 1.94kA at 5.2T larger than two times of a operating current of the elementary one. The MQE of the coil at 80% loading point was 110mJ (1.1W) at 5.2T. According to these results, the elementary coil can be expected enough performances.
