A Review of Smart Irrigation Decision Support Systems

Smart irrigation systems are designed to save as much water and costs in irrigation as possible in the precondition of ensuring the necessarily needed water by the crops. Numerous devices and systems integrating cutting-edge technologies in hardware and software have been invented to realize this goal. However, the autonomous large-scale smart irrigation system is still an unsolved and ongoing challenge. To get a clear picture of the current status and the opportunities, this paper investigated the existing smart irrigation systems reported in literature and agricultural community, and summarized the technologies and algorithms behind them, and revealed the major bottleneck challenges and the coming opportunities in this domain.
