Los grupos de autoayuda: una estrategia que favorece la satisfacción personal de los adultos mayores

2020
Introduction: A recurring trait of today's societies is the aging of their populations. It is no easy task for the elderly to get used to this period of their lives. Therefore, it is important to consider self-help groups as one way to foster personal satisfaction. Goal: To uncover the experiences within the framework of a self-help group which contribute to senior citizens' personal satisfaction. Methodology: Qualitative study of six senior citizens. Data analysis following Miles and Huberman's framework. Criteria of scientific rigor, credibility, and auditability were followed. Regarding ethical aspects the General Health Law was considered, specifically Title 5, Article 100, Section IV, which deals with informed consent of subjects involved in a study. Findings: One category entitled “Personal Satisfaction,” with four subcategories: “Building Emotional Bonds,” “Trust and Listening,” “Receiving Support from Peers,” and “A Taste for Recreation.” Conclusion: Self-help groups are an excellent way for senior citizens to find communal living, trust, and mutual concern. These groups foster a sense of belonging, which contributes significantly to reduce the potential risk of sadness, loneliness, or a sense of abandonment.
