A case study on membrane-based green technology in abatement of mercury pollution

2020
Abstract Mercury is a highly toxic metal with several serious health implications. This chapter describes briefly the sources, health implications, and possible abatement technologies of the dreaded mercury contaminant. The in-practice technologies in abatement of mercury have been narrated along with the possibilities of the use of membranes in separation. The best approach in environmental pollution abatement should be the preventive approach so that zero discharge can be ensured instead of the end-of-pipe approach. This is what has exactly been discussed in the context of adoption of membrane-based technology in the chlor-alkali industry.
