Machine Learning in Orthodontics: A New Approach to the Extraction Decision

2021
Introduction: The extraction of permanent teeth for orthodontic treatment has been in debate since almost the beginning of the orthodontics profession, and prominent leaders such as Edward Angle and Charles Tweed have argued opposing sides of the issue. Currently, there is a decreasing trend in premolar extractions for orthodontic treatment, but the decision remains controversial and at times unclear, especially in cases that may be borderline extraction or non-extraction. The advent of machine learning has led to its increased use in medicine and dentistry and has the potential to be used to clarify this classic debate through the analysis of big data.
