Control and safety systems for the microspheres based detoxification system

1998
Hemoperfusion and plasmaperfusion are well known as standard procedures in extracorporeal blood purification. To avoid the known problems like blood compatibility and to increase the efficiency, the Microspheres Based Detoxification System (MDS) has been developed. The newly developed system is based on the high adsorption capacity of microspheres in a recirculation system and can be used for long term treatment. Applications of the authors' system include acute hepatic failure, drug intoxications and sepsis. To perform animal tests and clinical studies a novel systems was designed including control and safety monitoring systems. Emanated from the failure analysis, parts of a common used hemodialysis machine were adapted and safety relevant circuits such as an intelligent watchdog, pressure monitoring circuits, etc. were added. The system is controlled by a PC and a self written control and monitoring software.
