Beginning with a categorisation of the various types of tool steels, the various microstructural constituents occurring in these steels are described, together with how they change during manufacture and heat treatment. In particular the effect of different austenitising conditions is also considered. Finally, the particular microstructural features of each of the individual groups of tool steels are discussed.
