Utilizing Provider Feedback to Develop Opioid Risk Mitigation Tools for the Military Health System

2017
Abstract : Since 2005, prescription opioid misuse and abuse among active duty military personnel has increased. Military healthcare providers function within a complex environment of care, treating patients who are often mobile and whose prior prescription history may be difficult to access. Clinical Decision Support (CDS) tools provide healthcare providers with knowledge and detailed information to enhance decision-making in the clinical workflow and patient healthcare. For example, CDS tools may help lower costs, improve healthcare efficiency and reduce the risk of medication errors and misdiagnoses. Provider feedback during the development and implementation planning process will likely benefit successful implementation of CDS in the Military Health System (MHS).
