The Application of Planning and Sustainable Design Concepts in Future Industrial Cities

The industrial cities represent one of the pillars of industrial development since they provide an appropriate environment to stimulate industrial investments. Industrial activities are one of the most activities affecting the natural environment; either by its output pollution which should be controlled, or by its association with the over-utilization of resources and raw materials. Despite the growth and development of the industrial sector accompanied by economic and social development reflected positively on the society, it has several dangers and environmental problems. In this respect, the role of urban planning and the industrial planner is crucial in applying the concept of environmental planning and sustainability to achieve safe and balanced environment with best utilization of resources. The paper describes the concept of sustainability and its application in the planning of industrial cities. It identifies modern trends in classifying the different types of industries according to their environmental impacts, and establishes the rules and criteria which should be followed in each phase in planning the industrial cities in order to keep up with the contemporary technical development in planning future cities. The paper also determines the roles of industrial entrepreneurs and the government in both activation and applying these criteria.
