AIDS in Staten Island.
1998
: Staten Island is a small community in spite of its proximity to New York City. The response of the community to a growing AIDS epidemic and a history of AIDS service delivery efforts are detailed. Community support comes from a variety of sources but is predominantly from those who have a friend or family member with HIV. Staten Island has instituted peer education programs and a training institute that serves several agencies. A variety of prevention programs include street outreach efforts, school programs, risk reduction workshops, and community forums. A substance abuse program also works actively with HIV-infected clients. The issues of condom availability and needle exchange have not been resolved yet.
