The Economic Performance and Labor Markets

2021
This chapter explores the cyclical and structural factors in Mexico regarding their implications for labor markets and labor union organization. In doing so, a longitudinal analysis of the variations in economic performance, unemployment and inflation rates is conducted. In the same way, diverse features of the employed labor force such as employment composition (industrial, services and agricultural employment), the characteristics of the workforce and the dimension of the informal sector are evaluated. Previously, the transition from the Imports Substitution Industrialization (ISI) model to the neoliberal model in Mexico is analyzed as a context of transformation which marked the evolution of the factors related to labor union density decline.
