Digital models of classified fractures and their clinical value

2011
Objective To establish three-dimensional (3D) digital models of classifled fractures and to study their value in clinic and teaching. Methods On the basis of the Chinese Digital Hunan-male No.1 data and scans of 6 healthy adult volunteers with 64 slice spiral CT,3D models of bones were reconstructed with software Mimics 10.01.Models of different types of fracture were simulated according to the following conventional classifications of fracture: Neer classification of proximal humerus fractures,Tile classification of pelvic fractures,Schatzker classification of tibial fractures and Lange-Hansen classification of ankle fractures.Fracture fragments were displayed in different color.Screen-captures of every fracture model from different directions were saved and video mode of the fracture model was exported.3D models of simulated fracture, line drawings, and X-ray films and CT scans of fracture were used, compared, and evaluated in clinical diagnosis and teaching of complex types of fractures in a team of 10 orthopedists and 20 medical students. Results The 3D models could display truly and three-dimensionally different classifications of fracture with a vivid visual effect. The simulated fracture could be observed and its screenshot could be taken from optional directions and angles,as the fracture model could rotate for 360° in the corresponding video mode.Eight orthopedists and 19 medical students ranked 3D models of fracture as the most helpful for understanding fracture classification. Conclusion The 3D models of classified fractures are very helpful in clinical diagnosis and teaching, particularly in understanding of complex fractures, because they can provide direct,three-dimensional and dynamic visualization of the fracture.
