A Finite Element Model for Three-Dimensional Flows Along the West Coast of Vancouver Island
1992
Extensive salinity and temperature measurements taken during June 1984 are used to calculate a three-dimensional density field for the west coast of Vancouver Island. Combining this field with average observed winds and estimated mean flows along the open boundaries, three-dimensional velocities are calculated diagnostically using a `wave equation' finite element technique. Results are compared with observed currents. Differences from both the homogeneous, and traditional dynamic height, solutions are discussed.
