Microbial indicators and biosensors for bioremediation

Abstract The growing need to solve pollution problems has brought innovative multidisciplinary solutions to the bioremediation field. Under increasing regulatory pressure, mainly sustainable and ecofriendly solutions have emerged. Here, we focus on synthetic biology tools which will completely change the future of bioremediation in the coming years. This chapter starts by highlighting the state of the art biosensors development. Then, their role in recent approaches in pollution monitoring is introduced consequently. Finally, different case studies of their success in bioremediation are presented. This chapter brings a complete overview to better understand the use of microbial biosensors and their potential in bioremediation to the audience who aim to familiarize with this fast-evolving field.
