CONSERVAÇÃO DE RECURSOS GENÉTICOS JUNTO AOS POVOS TRADICIONAIS DA REGIÃO NORTE DE MINAS

Agricultores do Semiarido Mineiro (regioes Norte de Minas e Vale do Jequitinhonha), individualmente ou de forma comunitaria, desde a decada de 1980, tem participado de diversas iniciativas, e as protagonizado, para ampliacao da base genetica de seus cultivos e para conservacaodos recursos fitogeneticos. O presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar algumas das diversas estrategias, pautadas em metodologias participativas e no protagonismo local, que estao sendo desenvolvidas no âmbito da conservacao e do manejo dos recursos geneticos vegetais na regiao. Destaca o papel desempenhado pelos guardioes da agrobiodiversidade e a constituicao de uma rede fisica para conservacao de sementes que vai das rocas aos “quartos” e casas locais de sementes; das casas de sementes comunitarias a casa de sementes regional; e desta para as casas para conservacao de longo prazo a ser realizada pela Embrapa. O artigo busca tambem reunir informacoes sobre o historico que possibilitou aos agricultores da regiao o acumulo de conhecimentos e capital social que culminou na formacao da Rede da Agrobiodiversidade do Semiarido Mineiro e na construcao, em 2012, do Plano de Acao Estrategico para Conservacao da Agrobiodiversidade, sob a coordenacao do Centro de Agricultura Alternativa do Norte de Minas e com recursos do Fundo de Reparticao e Beneficios do Tirfaa. CONSERVATION OF GENETIC RESOURCES BY TRADITIONAL COMMUNITIES IN THE NORTHERN REGION OF THE STATE OF MINAS GERAIS ABSTRACT Family farmers of the semiarid region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil (regions of Northern Minas Gerais and Valley of the Jequitinhonha), individually or communally, since the 1980s, have participated and played a major role in several initiatives to expand the genetic base of their crops and to conserve phytogenetic resources. This paper aims to present some of the various strategies – which are guided by participatory approaches and local leadership – that are being developed for conservation and management of plant genetic resources in the region. The article highlights the role played by the guardians of agrobiodiversity and the formation of a physical network for seed conservation that ranges from croplands to seed rooms and local seed houses; from the community seed houses to the regional seed house; and from the regional seed house to the houses for long-term conservation to be conducted by Embrapa. The article also seeks to gather information about the circumstances that enabled the farmers of the region to accumulate knowledge and social capital that led to the formation of a network for agrobiodiversity in the semiarid region of Minas Gerais, and the construction, in 2012, of the strategic action plan for the conservation of agrobiodiversity, coordinated by the centre for alternative agriculture in Northern Minas Gerais (CAA-NM), with resources of the Benefit-Sharing Fund of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA).
