Millenium of Ethelred's accession was marked by the publication of a most valuable collection of papers in which belated justice was done to that much maligned and misunderstood monarch. It is a matter of regret that that book is already out of print, and we may be grateful to Theodore Andersson for having reported many of the main points made in those essays in his contribution to the present volume. Fortunately Simon Keynes's very thorough and readable study The Diplomas of King JEthelred "The Unready," 978-1016, which has a much wider interest than its title may suggest, is still available. It should be required reading not only for historians of Anglo-Saxon England but also for students of Old English literature, so much of which derives from Ethelred's reign.
