Space Shuttle Automation Adds Operational Flexibility for Space Transportation Planning

2004
Incrementally automating the Space Shuttle flight phases can significantly improve future shuttle operations. Automating the shuttle return could facilitate the return of a damaged orbiter from station or the return of an incapacitated crew. While automating the rendezvous and docking maneuvers would reduce the crew work load and demonstrate needed capabilities for future space systems. Automating the shuttle would provide options to off load the crew for cargo missions and added crew safety in the future. Finally, shuttle automation could support growth to an evolved shuttle heavy lift capability.
