United or Divided? The framing of the Egyptian 2013 summer protests by Al Jazeera, the BBC and CNN

During the summer of 2013 all eyes around the world were fixed on the events taking place in Egypt. This thesis focuses on the portrayal of the Egyptian summer protests by the media over a month long period, studying the events leading up to the ousting of president Morsi and the violent aftermath of this key event. Thereby the online video broadcasts of two main Western news outlets; CNN and the BBC together with the largest Arab broadcaster; Al Jazeera, will be analyzed and compared in order to determine how not only these broadcasters framed the event, but more importantly what their framing of the protests says about the environment in which the stations operate. A combined quantitative content and qualitative textual analysis of the sample will provide a thorough answers to the aforementioned question.
