Self-generation of turbulent vortices in a two-dimensional model of cardiac tissue

Abstract Vortex formation and interaction is an important process in biological and physico-chemical spatio-temporal patterning. Here we demonstrate the autonomous development of turbulence in a two-dimensional excitable medium, by the process of vortex fragmentation.
