Microwave Radar Based Estimation of the Sway Angle of Payload in Overhead Crane System

The development of international trades, it also implies the high demand for overhead cranes. The efficiency and safety of overhead cranes operation need to be guarantee. However, one of significant problem in the crane operation is the accurate measurement of the sway angle. In this paper, we propose a new method to measure the sway angle of the payload using remote sensing technology. Thus using the mm-Wave sensors, the range between the sensors and object can be obtained directly. A range-to-angle algorithm multi dimension calculation was implemented for sway angle of the payload. The efficiency of this method is verified by simulations. An experimental setup was considered including the crane prototype miniature and LIDAR range sensor was used to validate the measurements performed using the microwave radar sensor. Experimental results were also included in the paper.
