Nanomaterials in the Treatment and Prevention of Oral Infections

2021
Oral biofilm- associated infections are common problem that is still actual, despite progress being made in the field of bioengineering and pharmacology in the last decade. This is due to diverse microbiology of oral biofilms, that are more frequently resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics. Such infections may infiltrate deeper anatomical areas and eventually become a serious threat to patient’s life. Nanotechnological approaches aim at designing antibacterial biomaterials and oral hygiene products that could provide prolonged, sustained activity preventing from disease. In this chapter extensive review of the current approaches to antibacterial nanomaterials for the purposes of dentistry and oral health will be discussed.
