Inhibition of copper corrosion in 3.5 percent NaCl solutions by triazole derivative

2009
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study the corrosion behavior of copper in 3.5 percent NaCl solutions with and without 3‐amino‐5‐mercapto‐1,2,4‐triazole (3‐AMT).Design/methodology/approach – Weight‐loss measurement, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are applied to study the corrosion behavior of copper in the absence and presence of different concentrations of 3‐AMT under the influence of various experimental conditions.Findings – The results show that inhibition efficiency (IE) increases with increasing the immersion time in the presence of 1.0×10−4 mol/l 3‐AMT and the IE% maintains about 94 percent during the studied inhibitor concentration of 5.0×10−3 mol/l. The Tafel polarization studies indicate that the IE% increases with increasing concentration of 3‐AMT, and the compound was a mixed inhibitor. The adsorption of 3‐AMT on the surface on copper has been found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the values of free energy of adsorption are calcu...
