Green synthesis and characterization for 8-hydroxyquinoline magnesium

2019
This paper presents a green synthesis of 8-hydroxyquinoline magnesium (MgQ2) method. 8-hydroxyquinoline magnesium was synthesized by violently stirring 8-hydroxyquinoline and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) in distilled water at 90 °C. The composition and structure of the product were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared absorption spectroscopy. And fluorescence spectra and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to study the fluorescence property and thermal stability of the product. The main results are as follows: The results of XRD, SEM, XPS and IR spectra show that using water as the solvent do indeed form the 8-hydroxyquinoline magnesium crystal, and the synthesized product had good crystallinity and high purity. The calculated yield of MgQ2 synthesized by liquid-phase method was 84.56%. Fluorescence spectrum analysis shows that the maximum emission wavelength of MgQ2 solid was 488 nm when using 368 nm as the excitation wavelength. TGA-DSC analysis shows that at 146 °C MgQ2 loss 5% weight. MgQ2 samples will be thermally decomposed at about 470 °C. It means MgQ2 has high thermal stability. These characters show that it can be used as luminescent materials.
