A novel compound mechanical seal of reusable rocket turbopump with superconducting magnetic force improving lubrication and stability

2021
Abstract A novel mechanical seal of reusable rocket turbopumps is invented for lubrication and stability improvement, in which superconducting magnetic levitation force is compounded irrespectively of hydrodynamic force. Then a numerical coupling model is constructed including magnetic field, fluid pressure field, asperity contact, and 3-DOF dynamic motion. A comparison of sealing performance and transient response is made between new structures and hydrodynamic mechanical seals under unsteady conditions. Results indicate that the novel mechanical seal could realize the separation of ring surface earlier in startup stage. Meanwhile, it has a significant control ability in clearance flow, vibration suppression, as well as avoidance of face rub-impact phenomenon. It could be applied potentially in other cryogenic equipment or bearing systems.
