Slot and DGS Incorporation for Bandwidth Enhancement of Substrate Integrated Waveguide Antenna

2018
In wireless communications, wideband antennas with low profile, low cost, and easy integration with other circuits are frequently required for many applications. Numerous methods have been attempted to achieve the antenna with such characteristics. In this paper, the bandwidth enhancement of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) antenna by incorporating slot and defected ground structure (DGS) is presented. A cross slot is applied upon the radiator of proposed SIW antenna, while a rectangular split ring slot combined with X-shape slot of DGS are incorporated at the groundplane. The proposed SIW antenna which is deployed on FR4 epoxy dielectric substrates is fed by proximity coupling method. The characterization result shows that the fractional bandwidth of 40.4% could be achieved by the proposed SIW antenna with the −10 dB bandwidth response ranges from the frequency of 1.652 GHz to 2.468 GHz.
