Notes on young squids dip-netted and incidentally jigged during the exploratory fishing on Dosidicus gigas in the Estern Pacific, December 1987-March 1988

1990
One hundred and nine specimens of young squids were identified. They were caught from off Peru in the period from December 1987 to March 1988 during exploratory fishing of the jumbo squ1d, Dosidicus gigas. Six species were identified, but the majority of them (97 out of 109) was Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis. Six juvenile specimens (15.5-18.8mm ML) seemed to be D. gigas. Such a poverty of juvenile of D. gigas will suggest that the fishing ground does not coincide with dispersal area of juveniles. In contrast to this, the present finding show an extensive dispersion of juveniles of S. oualaniensis in the surveyed area.
