Las y los “jóvenes indígenas”. Un acercamiento a su investigación en América Latina"

2020
The purpose of this paper is to present a review of different studies on indigenous youth in Latin America, a relatively recent issue confined mainly to countries where indigenous peoples or indigenous populations are concentrated and displaced as a result of armed conflict, loss of their territories or in search of employment and education opportunities. It is striking what happens with the so-called indigenous youth. Since the beginning of the new millennium, they have been living with great tension, on the one hand, the demands of modernity, expressed for example in the use of the official language, access and completion of formal education, informal employment or self-employment, and consumption of fashion goods and services for urban youth while, on the other hand, their families and communities of origin place their expectations on them to keep their culture, language, traditions and forms of government alive. The revised research papers highlight how indigenous youth are affected by migratory processes, education and participation in organizations, as well as the tensions that arise in their relations with the territory and community life.
