Novel linear actuator with concentratedly-placed stationary coils

2003
This paper presents a novel permanent magnet linear actuator having its coils at the edge of its stator concentratedly. This unique feature is obtained by exploiting the principle of the stepping motor, and brings various merits such as small size, light weight, cord-less mover, easy cooling, and lower cost The operation principle and variations of the proposed machine are explained. In the analysis of the proposed machine, a new analysis method for the toothed-pole electric machines is presented, which is based on the magnetic equivalent circuit and off-line numerical field analysis of the basic structure around the teeth, named the "Elementary Domain." The operation and the characteristics of the proposed machine are confirmed through analyses and the experimental evaluations of a prototype Machine.
