Effects of flux on crystal structure and photoluminescence properties of the Ba9Lu2Si6O24:Ce3+ blue-green-emitting phosphor

2017
Abstract The sintering flux of BaF 2 , H 3 BO 3 , and Li 2 CO 3 were introduced into the blue-green emitting Ba 9 Lu 1.9 Ce 0.1 Si 6 O 24 (BLS:10%Ce 3+ ) phosphor. By adding few amount of flux, the crystallization temperature lowers from 1400 to 1200 °C and the crystal structure has no change. H 3 BO 3 does not change the luminescence properties of BLS:10%Ce 3+ . BaF 2 blue shifts the excitation spectrum of BLS:10%Ce 3+ . Li 2 CO 3 blues shift the excitation and emission spectra of BLS:10%Ce 3+ . In addition to the effect of sintering assistant, Li 2 CO 3 also has a role of a charge compensator to balance the charge difference between Ce 3+ and Ba 2+ . Thus, Ce 3+ prefers to occupy the Ba 2+ site rather than the Lu 3+ site, which strongly blue shift the Ce 3+ emission from green color to blue color.
