A Survey of Indoor 222Rn in the Campania Region

The concentrations of indoor 222 Rn have ben determined in several areas of the Campania region (south Italy), where there is the highest natural radioactivity in Italy. The technique of charcoal canisters was used for measurements of a few days and nuclear track detectors (CR-39 and LR-115) for several months measurements. Check measurements for the techniques adopted were done with a continuous monitor based on a silicon alpha detector and focusing electrostatic fields. The houses built with volcanic materials, such tuff and pozzolana, have shown an activity approx. 60% higher than houses built with typical industrial materials, like bricks. Of about 300 measurements 80% of the values are 400 Bq.m −3
