Variation in the λmax of rhodopsin from individual frogs

Abstract The λ max of rhodopsin was determined for individual frogs using intact, isolated retinae and single rod outer segments. It was found that the λ max varied from animal to animal over an 8-nm range with a mean spectral position of 504.5 nm. This variation is not the result of other visual pigments or photoproducts and probably represents differences in the degree of opsin-chromophore interaction.
