A framework for the health-ready characterization of manufacturing systems

2021
Abstract Manufacturers often use reactive and preventive maintenance practices on their machinery, which can result in substantial economic losses that could be prevented with advanced maintenance strategies. While past research has defined frameworks and system architectures for smart manufacturing, guidance for implementing prognostics and health management (PHM) solutions for manufacturing is needed. This article presents “health-ready” concepts and characterizes health-ready capabilities for smart manufacturing systems to support the implementation of PHM solutions. Future work is recommended to evaluate the health-readiness of manufacturing assets and validate the expected value of increasing its health-readiness capability level.
