ADAPTIVE SKILLS AMONG CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES WHO UNDERGO COMMUNITY BASED REHABILITATION: A REVIEW

2021
Disable persons are often viewed as unable to be independent and lack of autonomy, due to their many shortcomings in many aspects such as physical and mental disabilities. Thus, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in United Nation in 2008, emphasized the rights of the disabled to empower them to be inclusive in the society. The Establishment of Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) is one of the strategies to empower disable persons for their life sustainability. The CBR is a daily rehabilitation center that offers education for children with disabilities who cannot be absorbed or later can be absorbed into the special need’s schools due to many factors such as physical and mental disabilities. Empowering children with disabilities can be seen by adaptive skills obtained at the CBR. As in Malaysia, The Disabled Persons Act 2008, indirectly recognizes their right and welfare. This review examines the adaptive skills acquired by the disabled children who have experienced CBR. The forms of adaptive skills in CBR includes motor skills, social skills and communication, personal living skills, self-skills, and community living skills. This article highlights that the disabled children could empower themselves after undergoing rehabilitation at the CBR. Utilizing these skills, the CBR is able to plan and improve their undergoing program for the comfort and social functionality of children with disabilities under their charge.   Keywords: Adaptive skills, children with disabilities, community based rehabilitation, empowerment, social functioning.   Cite as: Jamaluddin, Z., Mohd Ali Hanafiah, N., & Sayuti, R.
