Construction and Summary Statistics of the Data

In this chapter, we discuss the data that we use in most of the empirical work throughout this study. Some are based on established datasets, whereas others have to be constructed from raw data using additional assumptions, as published data do not exist or cannot be accessed. The most crucial missing data are that on disinvestments of capital stock through sales and retirements, which heavily affect the evolution of capital stock. In Sect. 3.1, we introduce and compare three methods for constructing disinvestment data for each category of capital goods. In Sect. 3.2, we examine the summary statistics of the constructed data and related statistics in preparation for the full-fledged empirical analyses to come in the subsequent chapters.
