EXHAUSTION OF GEOMAGNETICALLY TRAPPED RADIATION

The amount of matter that must be injected into belts of geomagnetically trapped radiation in order to lower the radiation levels is estimated. Two mechanisms are available for this purpose: the elastic scattering of particles into paths that will intersect the atmosphere before mirroring and the removal of the particles' energy by ionization and excitation.
